Naturalist and writer Ora "Andy" Anderson was passionate about conservation and remained an active participant in land preservation efforts even into his 90's. His dedication to preserving the natural beauty of Appalachian Ohio dated back to the 1930s when he was a young reporter and editor covering the establishment of the Wayne National Forest.

When Anderson passed away in 2006 at the age of 93, his family and friends decided it would be appropriate to start an endowed fund in his name through the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio.

The Ora E. Anderson Conservation Fund now exists to provide a permanent source of charitable funding for conservation activities and programs in the areas of watershed restoration, sustainable forest practices and promotion of the region’s cultural and environmental history. Through this fund, Anderson’s legacy of protecting the natural beauty of Appalachian Ohio continues. Every dollar contributed to the Fund remains in the Fund forever; only the interest and earnings are used in awarding grants.

"Ora Anderson had the soul of a poet. But his poetry was not merely in his writing, it was in every piece of wood he carved, every parcel of land he saved and nurtured, and in every person whose life he touched."
